Position Summary
As the Utilities Manager, you will be responsible for securing and managing utility services—primarily electric and gas—for our data center campuses in Virginia. You’ll handle permits, building approvals, and related documentation, ensuring that our sites have reliable and scalable infrastructure. Additionally, you’ll work closely with the Director of Development (based in Canada) on land and site-related tasks (about 5% of the role).
This position calls for a candidate who thrives on tackling complex utility challenges, is comfortable in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment, and has the confidence to negotiate with external vendors and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Utility Coordination: Oversee the sourcing and management of electric and gas services for data center campuses, including securing permits and managing vendor relationships.
- Permitting & Compliance: Collaborate with local and state authorities to obtain permits, ensure regulatory compliance, and handle any necessary documentation for data center development.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the Director of Development in Canada on land-related initiatives, ensuring all utility aspects align with overall project requirements.
- Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with utility providers, contractors, and internal teams to drive timely and cost-effective project completion.
- Project Oversight: Provide regular updates to senior leadership, track project milestones, and support the development and construction teams on utility-related matters.
- Industry Knowledge: Stay informed of industry trends, regulatory changes, and new technologies that could enhance operations and reduce costs.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Minimum 2–4 years of experience in data center operations, with a focus on utility (electric/gas) management.
- Some electrical background or hands-on knowledge is strongly preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with utility permitting, contracts, and vendor negotiations.
- Proficiency in MS Office or similar software for reporting and documentation.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfortable taking initiative, overcoming obstacles, and adapting to changing priorities.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Location & Availability:
- Must be based in Virginia (commutable to Ashburn and Virginia Beach).
- Willing to be on-site, as remote work is not available for this role.
